perineoplasty

Perineoplasty is a surgical procedure of reconstructing the vaginal opening and the perineum. Perineum is the area between the vagina and the rectum that provides structural support for surrounding organs and plays a role in keeping the vagina tight. Many women who had an episiotomy (incision on the perineum) or tearing during childbirth suffer from deformities of the perineum such as loosening of skin, bulges, and scar tissue from poor stitching or healing. This surgery aims to make the perineum area appear normal by removing excessive skin, suturing the underlying muscles and tissues, and bringing the outer opening of the vagina closer together, this can also help provide a more pleasurable sexual experience.

HOW TO CHOOSE A PERINEOPLASTY SURGEON

Gynecologists, urogynecologists, and plastic surgeons constitute the vast majority of specialists performing perineoplasties. It’s crucial to select a surgeon with extensive experience and appropriate training. During your consultation, ask to view before and after photos to assess the surgeon’s work. Note that some surgeons may not publicly display these images due to privacy concerns or consent issues. Dr. Judy Wei is a fellowship-trained board-certified OB/GYN and she completed an aesthetic vulvovaginal one-on-one surgical preceptorship.

PERINEOPLASTY FAQs

Women that have deformities of the perineum after childbirth caused by poor stitching or healing, suffer from undesirable appearance, loosening of the skin, painful sex, or decreased sexual feeling due to vaginal laxity can benefit from this surgery. Perineoplasty helps correct the area and improve the look and function.

Perineoplasty aims to make this region appear normal by excising excess skin, loose skin tags, and suturing the underlying muscles or the perineal body closer together to give a more snug feeling in the introitus or vaginal opening.

Perineoplasty is done in the operating room and the office under local anesthesia. The procedure almost always accompanies vaginoplasty since you are working in the same area. This procedure usually takes around 30 minutes to perform.

Patients will notice results once cleared by their surgeon after the initial downtime of 6-8 weeks post-surgery. However, there may be tenderness, swelling, and many other factors that may influence post-op results. Full healing of the surgery site and settlement into its new permanent state may take from 6 months to 1 year after the surgery.

For the first week, you should just relax, you may walk around and drive but must avoid all lifting, exercise, sex, vacuuming, and swimming. Starting at 6 weeks, patients will be instructed to follow a perineal and vaginal massage. The risks of not following the doctor’s recovery orders may include bleeding, infection, and broken sutures, leading to an unsuccessful surgery. Please follow directions, a revision surgery will only prolong the recovery process. Do not insert anything into the vagina! No tampons and no sex for 7 to 8 weeks. Dr. Wei will discuss all recovery medications and activities with you in detail after your surgery. Most patients can resume all daily activities within 8 weeks.

No maintenance is necessary. This procedure provides you with permanent results.

The only maintenance necessary will be your post-operation appointments with your surgeon to monitor your healing. These scheduled appointments will be discussed with you during your preoperative consultation.
